Influential art historian Michael Fried makes his argument for "Why Photography Matters As Art As Never Before." The answer: it supplies him with many examples to continue his debate about theatricality versus absorption. (In which absorption represents what is unique and best about modernism and the theatricality of movements like minimalism are of lesser interest and value.)
